Today, microbreweries are referred to as small breweries or craft breweries, where you can see that the quality is of a high standard. Nowadays, you rarely find bad flavors, but instead quality beer at your fingertips.

Craft beer faces stiff competition from other alcoholic beverages such as wine, spirits, seltzer, cider and ready-made drinks. But at the same time, craft beer is here to stay. Because it's certainly good to have a really good, high-quality craft beer.

In total, we now have over 500 breweries in Sweden, some of which are microbreweries, or rather craft breweries, which today deliver very good quality beer. A microbrewery is a small brewery that uses artisanal methods based on the classic brewing tradition when making beer. The first Swedish microbreweries were established around 1995. The trend with microbreweries comes from the UK and the USA. In the USA, the maximum production volume for a microbrewery is 1,760,000 liters per year. In Sweden, there is a rule that states that a microbrewery may not make batches larger than 200 liters.

An important law for Swedish microbreweries is from 2008, a law that means they were allowed to sell products in nearby Systembolaget, without a central purchasing decision. Before that, they usually only sold to restaurants, because Systembolaget then decided on purchases centrally and required a certain volume.

Some of Sweden's microbreweries are: Omnipollo, Poppels and Mariatorgets Bryggeri.

One of the breweries that is at the top is Omnipollo, which was founded in 2010 and started as a phantom brewery and brews very good quality beer. The brewery is known for its experimental, innovative beers and its graphic profile and was founded as a collaboration between brewer Henok Fentie and designer Karl Grandin with a shared vision to change beer – forever.
– We brew a multitude of styles to explore what beer has and can be. As a joint and equal partnership between a brewer and a graphic artist, our creative process has come to resemble the workshop for other pop cultural expressions such as music. Our beers are always a collaboration and we brew at breweries in all corners of the world. This approach means that we get to be curious, grounded and tuned in. Much like that good guest, says brewer Henok Fentie.

In 2021, they established their own brewery in the old Mission Church in Sundbyberg. They lifted out the old tanks and brewhouse, reinforced the floors, and brought in a specially designed and fully automated brewhouse from Germany.

– With drinkability and accessibility, all produced with the highest possible level of brewing principles where the goal is to provide a world-class end product, Henok continues. Omnipollo is often at the forefront when it comes to beer production.

Today, the company uses six different breweries, one of which is Kyrkan in Sundbyberg, which consists of a brewery, taproom and restaurant that is open seven days a week.

– Now it's up to us to show that craft beer can meet the expectations of the many beer enthusiasts. With Bryggeriet Omnipollo Kyrka we want to put Sweden on the international beer map, says Henok.

Since its inception, Omnipllo beer has been exported to over 45 countries, both in Europe and to other continents.

Another brewery is Poppels brewery in Jonsered, which was founded in 2012 by 15 beer lovers with a common dream; to spread the love for really good craft brewed beer. On December 1, 2012, their first beer was released at Systembolaget, namely their Brown Ale. Since then, they have brewed several more beers. Today, you will find 18 beers from Poppels.

In March 2015 they went on export, with Norway as their first port of call. And in May of the same year they moved into Jonsereds Fabriker, where they are still located today. The vision is that the new brewery will become one of Sweden's most inviting beer destinations. With a bar, restaurant and eventually a small shop. Since moving to Jonsered they have been brewing organically, as the formal certification process was completed in the fall of 2016, where they now have a number of beers in their range that are now organic.

In August, they opened a completely unique beer experience in the middle of central Gothenburg. They built what became the world's largest oak-barrel-based pilsner brewery with 170 seats and their own brewhouse, where the beer is pumped from fermentation tank to serving tank.

A well-balanced 
IPA Omnipollo is a Swedish beer brand that was founded in 2010 and started as a phantom brewery. The brewery was founded as a collaboration between brewer Henok Fentie and designer Karl Grandin. In 2021, Omnipollo established its own brewery in the former Mission Church in Sundbyberg. The name Omnipollo comes from a combination of the words ”Omnipotent” and the Spanish word for chicken «Pollo». The brewery has won several awards, including their double IPA Nebuchadnezzar winning the Best Beer of the Year award at the Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival 2012. Omnipollo is the Swedish beer producer with the most focus and success on the international market. 

Omnipollos Hatt IPA No. 38685, 34 SEK/330 ml Flavor: 
Fruity, hoppy aroma with hints of pineapple, mango and citrus with a light herbaceousness. 
Fits A companion drink to pork or lamb dishes.
A hop-aromatic DIPA 
Mariatorget's microbrewery was founded in 2011 and is run by Mats Tjärnstig together with his sons Simon and Joel and ranks high among all Swedish breweries. The brewery is located at Hammarbyhamnen in Johanneshov and brews most things except lager. Today you can find nine beers from Mariatorget's brewery at Systembolaget. Among them are IPA, DIPA, porter, ale and Barley Wine. The brewery is ranked among the best breweries in Sweden according to Untappd. 

Mariatorgets DIPA V7 No. 38435, 50 SEK/330 ml Taste: 
Hop aromatic, fruity taste with hints of mango, pineapple, honey, orange and apricot with a certain herbaceousness. 
Fits A social drink or with lamb or beef dishes.
A fruity sour beer 
Poppels brewery was founded in 2012 by 15 beer lovers with a common dream; to spread the love for really good craft beer. Today their brewery is located in Jonsered. On December 1, 2012, their first beer was premiered at Systembolaget, namely their Brown Ale. Since then, they have brewed several more beers. Peach Nordic Sour is a modern sour beer. Once the beer has been brewed, they sour it using a method called ”kettle souring”. It is a beer that balances acidity with sweetness, to get a fresh and fruity taste. The beer contains both barley and wheat malt. The brewmaster is Daniel Granath.
