Calm music reduces stress levels by lowering the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol and increasing the reward hormone dopamine. But that's not all. Now new research shows that low-frequency sounds can also
help the brain flush out beta-amyloids, the harmful proteins linked to Alzheimer's disease. In the study, researchers tested letting monkeys listen to sounds at 40 hertz and saw that it caused the brain to clear
The monkeys were allowed to play the sound for an hour every day for a week. After the experiment, it was seen that a significant amount of harmful proteins had been flushed out. In addition, the effect remained
for five weeks afterwards. This has raised the hope that sound stimulation might one day be used to treat the disease in humans as well. Although more research is needed to determine whether it also helps humans, listening to music in the 40 hertz range can hardly hurt, the researchers say.
