Do you often get calf cramps when you're out running? There's a somewhat unexpected home remedy that can help with cramps – namely cucumber peel, which means swallowing a tablespoon of the peel in the pickle jar. The acidic peel in pickled cucumbers affects a muscle reflex in the throat that is involved in cramps, according to scientific studies. When the peel goes down the throat, the reflex behind the cramp is turned off in a few seconds. This causes the cramp to disappear – or to last for a shorter time. You can get the same effect from a sip of apple cider vinegar, since it is probably the vinegar in the cucumber peel that turns off the cramp reflex. Previously, it was believed that calf cramps were caused by dehydration and a lack of certain minerals, but this has not been proven in studies.
